Welcome to the ALAMA Autumn Conference 2011
As current pressures on time and resources demand that any training event offers both excellent value for money and the highest quality content Perfecting Practice has been designed by ALAMA to provide Occupational Health physicians with a programme packed with cutting edge clinical content, relevant professional advice and guidance on current issues as well as a highly cost effective learning opportunity which has 18.5 validated CPD points.

Programme
The format of the three day programme has been developed to include a full session on General Medical Council matters, four special interest sessions as well as a wide range of clinical and management issues.

Clinical updates will focus on:
• Hip Surgery: Management, Prognosis and Rehabilitation
• Mental Illness
• Parkinson's and Related Movement Disorders
• PTSD Treatment and Management
• Shoulder Injuries: Diagnosis, Rehabilitation and Management
• Sleep Disorders and Shift Working
• Working with Multiple Sclerosis

Registration: The conference will run from midday on Wednesday 16th November until 13.00 on Friday 18th November. Please choose your registration package carefully and complete the secure online booking form on the Book now page.

GMC Matters
In a change to the usual format we plan to run a significant part of Thursday as a GMC session as there has been an increasing tendency recently for employees and sometimes employers to submit a complaint to the General Medical Council because they have not received the advice, outcome or opinion they wanted from an occupational physician.

The GMC's investigation of these complaints can be heavy handed, very intrusive and can cause occupational physicians considerable difficulties with all of their other clients. The vast majority of these complaints are spurious and sometimes vindictive.

OH Physicians are extremely stressed by the investigation process and feel that they are being treated as guilty until proved innocent by the GMC. Does the process breach Human Rights? Could the GMC handle these cases in a different way?

We hope to look at these issues in this session which will include:
• Members presenting complaint case histories
• Representatives from defence organisations
• GMC representative
• A leading QC
• Open and small group discussion
• Delegate feedback

Occupational Health Sector Meetings
Dedicated sector sessions have been increased to four; Fire & Rescue Services, GPs, Local Authorities and Police. These sessions will address specific topics and concerns within each area of OH practice. They are included in the main programme and will not now run concurrently as in previous years. This will allow delegates to attend all the sessions which are relevant to their own areas of professional practice.

Management and Motivation
The programme will also include key presentations on Motivation/ Communications Skills Coaching, Working with Disability and a final keynote session discussing Moral Dilemmas which is designed to offer delegates suggestions and strategies to help resolve the difficulties many face in the conflict with management/employee and the GMC over complaints.

Value for Money
The basic full package fee for ALAMA members is £550. With 18.5 CPD points accredited to the Perfecting Practice programme this registration options offers CPD points at less than £30 per point. With the often immeasurable value gained from networking with likeminded professionals as an inbuilt extra the ALAMA conference is excellent value for money. Members of ALAMA who wish to arrange a split payment (employer/private) may do so by contacting the organisers prior to booking.

Attending the ALAMA Autumn Conference is an excellent opportunity to perfect your practice in patient care and professional procedures. It is an opportunity not to be missed.
